The Greek Islands are spread out over a large area and here we focus on the Ionian islands, opposite Albania and south of Italy. Historically they have been influenced by the French and the British. The beautiful old town of Corfu shows their legacy. The sailing is usually tranquil with spirited days between the islands. Swimming, snorkeling and paddle boarding are a joy in the warm clear waters.
Yacht charter in the Greek Ionian
The Greek Ionian Islands south of Corfu are a wonderful cruising area, full of pine clad bays, olive groves and sandy beaches. There are some great islands to visit, with Paxos, Levkas, Cephalonia, Ithaca being the largest and Meganisi, Kastos and Kalamos being some of the smaller. The waters are clear and clean and the wind is gentle for relaxed sailing. The cuisine is typically Greek and each island has its own speciality. A one or even better, a two week cruise in this area makes a perfect sailing holiday. Evening meals can be taken ashore or booked onboard.
We start and finish the cruising in Saranda in Albania to satisfy Greek charter regulations which allow only Greek flagged vessels to charter in GR waters. Saranda is a short ferry ride from Corfu town, which itself is a short taxi ride from Corfu airport. It’s currency is the Albanian Lek, the currency in Greece is the Euro.
